Once Upon a Time: Ep. 8-9-10

It's been a few weeks since I last caught us up on Mary Margaret's apartment and wardrobe (ha). Last we left off, poor Graham had been killed by heart-crushing at the hands of the dastardly Mayor Regina (the Evil Queen).

Graham, we still miss ye.

Episode 8 picks up with Emma trying to win Graham's recently vacated sheriff's position. There was mention of an autopsy (sob!) and I think autopsy trumps True Love's Kiss. $#!@. There was very little MM in this episode save this cute scene with an equally cute hat:

The girl has more hats, coats and scarves than the rest of the town combined. Poor Emma is still wearing that red leather jacket. Although it's probably symbolic and I just haven't figured it out yet.

And there was one really clear shot of the kitchen that shows her pretty pots on the top of the cabinet. Love the frosted glass on the cabinet door to the right too:

(Oh, and Emma becomes sheriff. We also got Rumplestilstkin's surprisingly sympathetic backstory.)

Moving on to episode 9...this was Hansel and Gretel, very well played by the two young actors in the parts. But the real news? We got inside Emma's bedroom! (I was probably as excited as David would be, although obviously for different reasons).

I love that wrought iron bed. Alot. The mismatched pillows are sweet, and I love the mug with an "M" (I think that's an anthropologie mug).

Of course Emma has an old chenille bedspread (so do I, although mine is the reverse colorway, jadite green with white and pink chenille):

Look really close at the photo below...see that mirror on the far wall? Look at what's on the wall we never see...a vintage train case! In YELLOW.

One full shot of the kitchen area...it's nice to see the entire set to get some perspective.

Guess what else we got a decent shot of? The sewing machine!

And some really ugly pants. Sorry MM, these were a *miss*. But the top is pretty:

What's odd is in the shot below, the sewing machine has been flipped around, so now the flywheel is showing, not the decorative faceplate. Same scene. I do like the stainless dish drain.

And the grey-blue stencil mugs (also anthro?) Can you still buy milk in a glass jar? Milk must taste better if it comes out of a pretty glass jar, am I right?

Which brings us to episode 10, "7:15". It was more Snow and Charming backstory and it was awesome. I might have squealed a little at this:

(I have to admit I chuckled that the eighth drawf was named "Stealthy". May he rest in peace.)

So this episode was filled with story both in Storybrooke and Fairytale Land. Much of it straight out of a Harlequin romance novel. We had MM falling off a cliff, surely to her death...

Only to be rescued in the nick of time by David, who said he couldn't let her go off on her own.

We had lots of tight head shots of lovely Snow/MM...

And Charming/David:

(The above during the ubiquitous Harlequin "OMG it's going to thunderstorm we must take cover in a super conveniently located abandoned cabin with plenty of dry firewood so we can build a fire and get you out of those wet things" moment.)

We had two or three of these that never came to fruition:

Thankfully we had something I've personally been waiting for, a bit of Red backstory. How awesome that she's friends with Snow!

We had one fabulous sweater:

And one mysterious and handsome newcomer. With a typewriter.

Emma's puzzled. Who is he in the book? You just know that's what she's thinking. That's what everybody's thinking. (A Grimm? Doesn't he know he's on the wrong network?)

And despite their denials and best intentions, one (tv) hour of missteps and almosts was finally enough to push them over the edge, and we hit paydirt.

Bout time.

(Madame Mayor was not amused.)

(and...There was a heartbreaking twist in Fairytale Land for Snow and Charming that I can't wait to see play out. I love how these are multi-dimensional stories. You have to pay attention! )

Vintage Kitchen

As part of my Vintage Kitchen Spruce Up of 2012 (didn't I mention that? No?) I've been scooping up vintage kitchen pretties over the past couple of months. The light was pretty today so I snapped a few shots to share.

I couldn't pick a favorite, but that little green bird is the sweetest. It's a lone single from a salt and pepper shaker set, c. 1950. The hen & nest is very small, only about 3.5 inches tall.

The full set of Tripp milkglass shakers (with original red metal stand!) was a find (and a steal) on etsy a month ago. I was positively giddy (that bright turquoise in the corner was holding sweet peas for my lunch, it's a vintage Pyrex refrigerator dish).

Of course, I couldn't resist the Japanese kokeshi salt & pepper shakers when I saw them. I love their little faces and bright colors.

My kitchen is settling into a jadeite and red colorway that I didn't expect or plan. In fact, I was sure it was going to be yellow, turquoise/blue and red. I'm actually considering painting my kitchen a soft jadeite color (and my cabinets bright white) as soon as it warms up this spring.

Well... First I watched the entire first season of Downton Abbey. How have I been missing this all this time?? PEOPLE. You're supposed to CLUE ME IN.

I love Mary. I loved to hate her at first...then I got to know her better and now she's my favorite. I can't wait to see Season 2! More on their fabulous fashions after I've had a chance to collect images of my faves.

Then I watched some Project Runway All Stars.

Yup, I broke my PR abstinence because so many of my favorites are there... Mondo, Michael, Sweet P, Kenley, Austin, Jerrell. You know, I always loved April before, but I dislike her immensely in the 2 episodes of this All Star season.

Oh dear, how I've missed you.

It's the weekend! I hope to do something productive this weekend. Including working on a dress I've had in my head for a while, maybe one of these:

Woohoo!!

What a week. I had 2 "Professional Development" days, 3 brand new classes of little children to educate (ha, "little" as in many of whom are taller than me), and an absolutely wonderful bronchitis/sinus infection to make the evenings a real pleasure. (that last one was sarcastic. In case you didn't catch on.)

I even fell asleep halfway through this last night:

How awesome was it to see Sweet P and Mondo and Anthony! And April and Kenley! I was always one of Kenley's biggest fans, and always suspected she was a victim of unfair editing during her season (which I think was later more blatant in Wretchen's season. Who was truly Wretched and no one will ever convince me otherwise. NO ONE disses Tim Gunn).

Anywho.

There was no progress on my Ottobre top. But I plan to whip it up quick this weekend and then move on to something else, maybe something from my stack of Butterick/Vogue patterns (from the sale last week) or maybe a Colette pattern. I'm really wanting to do a Colette pattern... I've also never blogged my finished Violet blouse, because it still needs buttons. (who else waits 4 months for buttons?) I think I'll go with pearl and stop worrying about "perfect" so I can start wearing it!

Right now I'm starved so I'm going to veg and watch some of him

Ottobre 5/11 #9 Top: In progress

Well let's just start off with a bang. Best foot forward and all that. I traced top #9 from the Ottobre 5/2011 issue yesterday afternoon. (I wasted about 2 hours just trying to choose a project!)

I had a turquoise cotton interlock in my stash. Unfortunately I underestimated the hem flair of this little top, so i didn't have quite enough fabric when I got to the sleeve piece. I cut the rest of it out anyway and will make it sleeveless, using knit scraps for binding the armholes. Not exactly what I wanted, but that's OK. I have lots of cardigans!

I didn't have quite enough to do the full set of gathers in the CF either. Now I'm stuck with a bit less gathering there, because I had already cut out the rest of the top. I really wish I had done the CF first and had fewer/no gathers on the CB. (Just FYI, I had almost 1.5 yards of fabric and 1.75 would have been perfect).

This top looks really voluminous in flat pattern sage. I was hoping for a slimmer profile like in the magazine photo. I'm glad I used a relatively thin interlock!

Back to school for me today, so we're back on "after school and weekend" time frames. It's Monday, people!

Goals for '12

Happy New Year!

I've enjoyed reading everyone's 2011 recap and new goals and resolutions for '12 so far. I went back and revisited my "goals for '11" post from one year ago to see how I fared (I usually fare pretty awfully, ha!) This verdict? Not too shabby!

I had 10 goals last year. How'd I do in 2011? Well...

I totally failed on #1 (pay off my credit card; but I made progress!), #7 (sew one vintage pattern per month; dismal failure) and #9 (fill my closet with handmades; ditto). I would say I did reasonably well on #2 (bake more bread & treats) for the first half of the year and then fizzled out on the 2nd half of the year. I can do better.

I was a slam dunk success story on the rest:
#3: Plant a bigger garden:

Sadly the 110+ degree temps for several weeks killed most of my garden earlier than I would have liked.

#4 (become more self-sustaining), #5 (buy local and Made in USA), #6 (thrift more) were rousing successes too. I'm much more thoughtful when I purchase new and I always look at the country of origin label if it's a "store bought" item, even cosmetics or cleaning products. I've purchased almost totally handmade and vintage/thrifted items this year for our home, and I've tried my hand at making stuff too, like laundry detergent.

(I use recipe #3 from this page: 10 Homemade Laundry Soap Recipes, except I use these proportions and I use 1-2 capfuls of Gain liquid detergent per bottle for scent (I like recipe #4 when I do the powdered version):
1/2 bar Fels Naptha
1 c washing soda
1/2 c Borax)

#8 (buy quality fabrics) was also achieved, although to be honest, I didn't buy many new fabrics. I don't really need any! I did invest in some quality linens and shirting cottons though, and a couple of pieces of vintage rayon and cotton.

#10 was my favorite success though, spend quality time with my kids. This included a fabulous trip to Yellowstone National Park:

But we also just hung out and did every day things together too.

Looking forward, what would I like to change for the new year... Hmmm. I like all of my goals from last year! I think I'll keep and amend those. They're more "life" goals really anyway.

1. Pay off the credit card (still super do-able and always a worthwhile goal. If my youngest will stay off the dirtbike and/or wear a helmet).

2. Plan meals & cook more! I'm terrible at this during the school year, but I started planning meals about mid-way through September and it has made a world of difference. Plus...leftovers for lunch saves time too! Of course bake more bread and homemade treats is included here again too.

3. Plant a bigger garden. (Keeping this one!) I enjoyed trying new varieties of veggies last year. I'm going to try strawberry pots this year.

4. Spend with good conscience. Grow my own food, shop at the farmer's market, shed excess "stuff", buy handmade and thrifted, shop Made in USA or quality imports. We're all responsible for fair labor practices! It's only through our spending habits that we can initiate change.

6. Sew every week! I'd like to sew an average of two garments per month. There are some lovely Ottobre and Burda magazine patterns I'd like to try, not to mention my vintage stash. I need a goal too; two garments per month are completely within the realm of possibility. I'd like to turn things around on the garment sewing front here.

I'm sad to say I have fallen into the trap of "waiting til I lose weight"for some things, including sewing. Well, I'm tired of waiting. I LIKE to sew. Who CARES if my wobbly bits show more than I'd like in that skirt or this dress. Who CARES if it's probably not an "appropriate" choice for my size/figure. I LIKE to sew and I LIKE wearing cute fabrics and items that I design and make. I'm going to sew more.

7. Learn a new skill: Photography: I really love taking photos. So far, it's just been a casual hobby, but I'm ready to get more serious and really LEARN all the things I'm just guessing at right now.

8. Enjoy my job. I need to get better at time-managing my day so that work is work and home is home, and both will be more enjoyable! I like my job place and what I'm teaching; that's all that matters as far as work goes. I'm going to focus on that and that alone while I'm there. I'm going to ignore everything else and come home at 3:45!

9. Redecorate my house to reflect my style. This is a biggie! I've been living in a limbo of hand-me down furnishings and non-style, really not paying much attention to this part of my life for long enough. I love vintage and farmhouse chic; I've been working on this one for about a month now. I want my little house to be all ME! After all, I spend a great deal of time here. :)

10. Live happy, every day. Life is special and fleeting and I want to fill it up with all the things that make me happy: my kids, writing more, sewing more, taking more photos, sharing here on the blog more. Living in the moment, that's my goal.

Simplicity Patterns: Finding the mojo.

I ran across a cute blog before Christmas called Idle Fancy. Her archives are worth a look, she's a cutie! And I love her Simplicity 2591, the post I linked up there.

Unfortunately Simplicity 2591 is OOP.

Fortunately, Simplicity.com still has some in stock! Of course an order of one pattern means I need an order of a few patterns. To justify shipping, you know. I wanted Simplicity 2591 because of it's multi-cup sizing, and because every single version online that I've seen is adorable and flattering. Such a cute little dress! Perfect for spring and summer, but maybe with sleeves and tights and a cardi...? Winterish too?

I also got Simplicity 4173, a vintagey sundress and peasant top/skirt combo. I have seen some 1950s vintage patterns that are similar.

Simplicity 2367, a selection of pants and skirts (and those shorts are adorable! Although probably too young for me. Ummm in the same vein as playsuits, I probably won't care!)

Then there's this Cynthia Rowley, Simplicity 2361, that I meant to buy back when it wasn't OOP. And then I went on my pattern fast that shockingly never ended. (I haven't bought patterns in months and months!) Also a summery dress. Hmmm. Is there a theme here?

Ok, whew. ONE is seasonal appropriate. Simplicity 1941, the Amazing Fit blouse. I don't think this one is OOP.

Part of my neverending quest to find the Holy Grail of Blouse Patterns. You know the one where angels sing and the heavens open up and shine down perfect bustlines and photos that look Photoshopped but are totally not?

Actually I have no idea if any of these besides 2591 are OOP. In my head they all are but the blouse. Which probably means I made that up. In the vast, carnivorous, fiction spewing recess called Mah Brain.

Sadly, I can't work on any of these. They haven't arrived yet. They've been sitting at a FedEx in Lenexa, KS since December 24. Come on, FedEx! Did you take this week off to recuperate or what?

I bet business really hate that pesky tracking number we can all check and obsess over.

I hope your holidays were spectacular! Mine were! Got loads of good stuff like pj's and bracelets and snuggly baby kisses and The Help (which I'm getting ready to watch right this minute while wearing said pj's and fuzzy socks.)

I've got baking and wrapping and holiday movie-watching and cookie eating and hot chocolate making and...

1937 Friendship Quilt

I won an ebay auction a couple of weeks ago, for a friendship quilt dated New Year's, 1937. The date is pretty precise, because the quilt was signed with embroidered sentiments and signatures.

I love everything about this quilt. I love the colors, the feedsack fabrics, the simple patchwork. But it's the variety of embroidered signatures, names and places that makes me very happy. What a sweet memento. I'm sad that no family wanted to keep this treasure, but happy that I can spruce it up and set it out for a whole new family & generation to enjoy.

It does need some repairs, but most of that is handstitching several unsewn seams, not repairing holes. Simple handwork while I'm watching Christmas movies on my holiday break! It has been stored in a cedar chest and is really pretty pristine for its age. I'm hoping a soak in the tub and careful drying (after it's repaired) and it will be ready to hang over a nice quilt rack. Which I don't have yet. Something to add to my flea market list!

In other news...it's the boy's birthday today. My handsome boy is 17. How time flies...

Happy birthday to my 'little' comedian (he's about 6'3, so not so little anymore).

You can see the unwrapping of the gift involved lots of fur help. Last night I laughed so hard at something he did (unintentional slapstick), I honestly thought I was going to wet myself. My side ached for a good hour.

Once Upon a Time: Apartment Envy - Episode 7

With the *sob* Graham story crushing my heart and soul, I didn't have room in the last OUAT post to share MM's apartment. Or outfit.

(Oh yeah. You know it's bad if I can't even talk vintage housewares and dirndl skirts).

So in Episode 7 we got another brief, brief peek about Mary Margaret's apartment. Mostly little touches that help fill in the blanks.

First up... just your average, ordinary ironing board. Right? Plain little wall and window. Except... what's that in the lower right hand corner but... a vintage sewing machine? Yes?

New angle! I think we've seen all four corners of MM's open plan apartment now. LOVE the wardrobe and what are those on top? Mailboxes? We also scored another bedroom peek in this ep. Check out the trunk at the foot of her bed. Yellow!

Dining table also appears yellow, at least in this shot. I don't know if I saw that before? Love the embroidered dresser scarf on the table. The blue deer planter back on the side table kills me every time.

Next to MM's elbow... a vintage 6-arm swinging dishtowel rack. Want.

Crocheted potholder in jadeite and red!

This is a good time to point out MM's cute outfit too. Darling, simple white top with allover doilies. I've seen this top somewhere (anthro? Leifsdottr?) but it's been a while. Cute. Easy to replicate. She wore it with a swishy dirndl skirt and skinny brown belt.

Still crushed though. Stupid show with the enviable apartment and wardrobe that beckons me.

Once Upon A Time: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Read at your own risk: spoilers abound! This is the one that hooked me but good. Damn them.

The "Hunter"in the title is our adorable Sheriff Graham.

Sheriff Graham, about whom I waxed poetic just a few days ago. Frankly, my poetic waxing has never fared well for a show. Or a character.

I should learn to keep my mouth shut.

Here's the recap (with tiny bits of apartment news and a cute outfit coming in a later post). To get things off to a rockin' start, Graham, in a fit of pique, slams a good one on Emma.

Who soundly rejects him (yea, like she's such a puritan). Graham hardly notices because Emma's sweet, sweet lips have caused a mental flash flood of memories of his "real" existence in fairytale land.

With Emma stalking down the street in the opposite direction, Graham decides to test this kissing flashy thing out on the mayor to see what he can see.

Try the cold, dark depths of her soulless heart.

We do get a peek at the Evil Queen's palace. I knew it. She's Romulan.

Her Evil Barbie Dream Palace does include a fabulous Evil Barbie wardrobe though.

Gina Lollobrigida? Is that you?

Hey you know what else is cool about being a powerful--yet evil, man-pet keeping--witch? Er, queen?

You wake up in the dead of night with your pet, I mean, paramour, and your face is toast.

But wait! He flits his gaze for one second to his escape pants so far, far away on the floor and BAM.

Booyah! My face is purrrrfect.

So what was our boy toy remembering about his other life? Well, Snow for one thing. Graham is, as I've suspected all along, the Huntsman. Dispatched by the Queen to kill the fair Snow White.

Except he can't do it. But he looks good in queen's knight black leather in spite of his henchman failures.

Back at casa mayoral, he confirms his identity with Henry, who tells him a story.

And also... he looks really, and I mean really, good in all-over black leather.

In case you missed that part. (But that creepy Medusa mirror squicks me out. Black leather. Black leather. Black leather.)

We do learn a really creepy pet project of the Queens. Collecting hearts. To crush to bits. Or for a light snack.

And anytime Mr. Gold shows up in an apron with a shovel is obviously Not. A. Good. Day. (or it's just your average, every day polar bear in paradise. Take your pick.)

Graham's memories include his wolf family (who raised him, as the Huntsman) and he begins following a wolf in Storybrook, convinced the wolf will lead him to his heart. (last seen above, clutched in the Queen's claws).

Emma helps. Mostly because she's convinced he's off his nut, but also because he's pretty.

The mayor is not happy.

Girl punches are thrown. It was a bit awesome. Graham dumps Evil Mayoress, completely and totally. Irrevocably.

And then we get my favorite reveal.

SHE KNOWS.

And then we get sweet, sweet moments of charming Irish goodness like this:

Did you know Modcloth had extended their selection of larger sizes recently? Every time I visit their website, the number of pieces they carry increases! (You can also now search by size, which is pretty handy). For a website that used to feature mostly smallish clothes for smallish people (the largest bust size for most items is still 38"), that's awesome.

Aren't they gorgeous?? These dresses are all offered up to at least a 48" bust. Even better...I think I've shown one or two of these previously when they were only available in a 38" bust and below.

The last dress, the Happy to Homemake Dress, looks very similar to the Favorite Things Prairie Girl pattern.

Which I've made here and here. And possibly once more, but I can't find the link. I love, love, love this pattern. And I could totally knock off that Modcloth "homemaker" dress in a pretty rayon. (What an odd name, although I think it's supposed to be an homage to a '40s housewife? Maybe?)

As a sidenote, I would invest in more Favorite Things patterns, but I found a discrepancy in the Hip Skirts pattern and I emailed them about it (just FYI if you have that one, the length of a couple of the skirts in the Hip Skirts pattern is really short, despite what the pattern cover photo shows). I got a super snippy reply in response and unfortunately that has colored my view. Whenever I reach for another of their patterns at my local quilt shop, I remember that email.

Four years later.

There's a lesson there. Somewhere.

In any case, I still love the Prairie Girl pattern and may have to dig it out and see if I have any suitable fabrics. (haha. That's funny.)

Retro Cafe Curtains

I had quiet time this afternoon, so I whipped up a pair of vintage-inspired cafe curtains:

This week while I was perusing that magical time suck Pinterest, I saw this photo and got all inspired.

Darn if I can find the link now though. I also love the towel rod with hooks to hang colanders and baskets (instead of a valance). Cute idea that still lets lots of light in.

I used a Darlene Zimmerman "Clothesline Club" 1930s print, red and blue rickrack, and my last bit of red pom pom trim. I didn't even swap out thread to match. I sort of like the contrast. No pattern, just measurements for the width and length, plus hem and pocket (with a little ruffle).

They are bright and cheery and I love them. Easy Sunday project!

ps...How fun is that evil little potholder face. I love him. He's my favorite!

Once Upon a Time: Episode 6 "The Shepherd"

This was a Prince Charming background episode, and I loved it. We had lots of Charming himself.

We also got King Midas. And a DRAGON. Didn't see that comin.

In Storybrooke, we were treated to a couple of cute dresses and the briefest shot of MM's bedroom. So let's recap (that means let's talk about the clothes. And maybe the apartment). Charming (David) tracks down Mary Margaret and finds her in what could be a seriously cute little pea coat. I'm not sure. It's too dark. (I just like their earnest expressions so it deserves a spot.)

Then we find MM scrubbing dishes in her little kitchen and BAM. I'm knocked for a loop at the bunny on her cabinet (and more wire baskets for shelving!)

I have that exact bunny. Er, I had that exact bunny.

I think I might have just thrown him out in a fit of organizing.

Drat.

Then I notice she's in a silk (silk-y??) top and jeans (very un-MM-like, and I'm diggin it), but wait!

Bedroom!

Of course her bed is wrought iron.

Now you're picturing Charming amongst all that frothy voile and pale bedding. Aren't you.

No? Just me then.

Next we are treated to a very retro 80s navy polkadot dress and red cardi. I love the skinny red belt.

Last we see her, MM is getting her heart broken, in a fashion much as she suspected.

At least she looked lovely. I recognized the dress immediately.

Tomorrow's episode looks extremely interesting... The sheriff is becoming one of my favorite characters. Can't wait!

Magazine Love: Mary Engelbreit Home Companion

Even after 3 years, I still miss my ME Home Companion magazine in the mailbox.

I subscribed early on, back when Mary still illustrated the covers. I LOVED my Home Companion!! My mailbox just hasn't been the same since they ceased publication.

Here's some amazing news...Mary Engelbreit is trying to revive her magazine! If you follow this link, you can vote in the poll and leave a comment telling Mary (and potential publishers) how much you miss MEHC and how you'd be doing the happy dance in mazazine aisle of Barnes & Noble if only Home Companion would come back. (And then subscribe!)

Sadly, I had a bathroom pipe bust open and the ensuing overspray wiped out most of my back issues earlier this year. But I've been collecting them on ebay here and there. I got really lucky and won a big old box of 'em a few months ago. I'm still ferreting out the early issues though...I only have ~~two from 1999 now, and none from '98~~. Strike that. I now have 4 from '98 and 3 from 99! Woohoo for ebay watch list!

I have Pinterest boards for both Christmas and handmade Gifts, but I haven't had time to even peruse them.

Next year seems so far away, and yet I found myself just this past weekend thinking about planning better next year.

Shortly after that I realized my life could stand to be a lot simpler.

I started by unsubscribing from every company in my email inbox. Two hundred plus emails a day is 195 too many.

Then I got really radical and deleted my Facebook account.

I originally created my FB account when I was doing business on ebay sewing toddler girl's clothing. Then I kept it because I discovered my tiny babies were suddenly teenagers and I wanted to keep up with them (and their friends).

Then all my coworkers and friends (old, new and barely met yet) had a Facebook. So I should have one! Except... it kinda creeps me out. It's always creeped me out. It's terribly invasive. It's time-consuming. It's a new and improved way for people to be rude and unkind to one another. It's a neverending mish-mash of TMI.

Once Upon a Time: Episodes 4 & 5

I was so happy we were able to get a better peek around MM's apartment a couple of weeks ago. I bring pictures!

Let's start in the kitchen/dining area. MM's apartment looks to be one wide open space, possibly with a bedroom loft? I love the open cabinets. And that fridge!

Industrial clock, and I need that hanging basket by my back door for gloves and mittens.

I am so in love with that green shelf on the left (below). And that farmhouse table!

Random vintage frames stacked against the wall...

And on into the living area, a mid-century credenza as bookcase. Lovely. I was stalking a vintage radio JUST like the one below and when Lu and I went to buy it on my birthday shopping trip last week, that booth had closed up. Rats! Look closely...the milkglass vase below holds a vintage spinning top. And there's an M for Mary Margaret.

The one that keeps getting away...the sewing area, every shot out of focus (but this time well-lit). Rats again. Loving that chair. And what exactly is on the rack thingie against the wall? Jewelry? Threads?

Then last week, we got one more quick look at the kitchen area, and MM was wearing a sweet cardigan and skirt in one of my favorite color combo's...coral and teal/turquoise:

If you look really close you'll see a wire basket at the lower left corner holding stuffs. I want.

Charming showed up (er, in the episode. Not in MM's apartment. I wish!)

And then we got a look at MM's shoes. YELLOW FLATS. I told you we were besties.

Charming and his very attractive face. In case you have forgotten about it. Which would be just plain silly. So I remind you:

Oh. Ummm... Also, there were also mine cave-ins and assorted Mr. Gold evilery and Madame Mayor witchery.

(psss...I almost hate to say this, but those towels are by Moda, and Moda also sells many of their cute vintage toweling BY THE YARD! Ebay, my friend.)

So cute! Although I really prefer vintage finds... These say "Imported" and I'm a bit leery of what that might mean as far as fair labor practices go. Besides, there really are PLENTY of cute crochet potholders at the flea market stalls!

House 8810 has lots of other cute, unique household goods too though. Definitely worth a perusal if you're shopping for that hard-to-please vintage enthusiast! (Not affiliated in the least, I just like their stuff.)

I also really love the Bear and the Honeybee on Etsy. Would you just look at this beauty? That green is PERFECT.

Crochet Rag Rug: In Progress pt 2

My rag rug is progressing along quite nicely. It's about the size of a large placemat now. (I actually haven't worked on it since Saturday though).

I did run out of scrap jelly roll strips and had to tear strips of other color-appropriate fabrics. I rolled them into a giant rag ball.

We also put our little tree up. It makes the living room so festive...

In the lower corner you might spot another new winter project emerging... 3.5" squares of vintage feedsack cloth and reproduction 30s prints. A quilt? A throw?

I'm not sure, but I have this lovely book for inspiration:

Burda Style 12/11

The December issue usually focuses on party and fancy wear, and I don't normally find much I actually use. Actually...I don't know if I've ever made anything from a December issue before. But, this one has one spectacular vintagey dress in particular, and several other noteworthy pieces too.

Let's start with the vintagey dress. Very '40s with the fluttery sleeves (notoriously low Burda neckline notwithstanding). #107

This suit also has a vintage feel, Jacket #103:

and Skirt #105

Dress #102, a sweet, saucy little thing. Better suited to spring & summer, maybe?

The cover garment (US) is this rather delicious pink coat. It's just different enough to be amazing, AND it would look smashing with a cloche hat!

The Plus section has some repeats we've seen before, but I still like this top, #132:

And these trousers are a great basic, #133:

And another basic, a little unlined jacket, #131. The fabric will make or break this one because the design lines are very plain.

Honorable mentions... The leather pleated skirt. I will not be making this in leather, but I do love the pleated style in a fun print for spring!

And what I immediately thought of as the Atonement dress...

Not a true knockoff, but a sleek facsimile. The color of the original is to die for though.

And let's not forget the "Nosy" outfit either.

Isn't that just like something Betsy McCall's dog Nosy would wear??

Crochet Rag Rug: In progress

I've been window-shopping braided and rag rugs for a while now. I've even haunted ebay. They're so expensive! I had never really thought about making my own, because it seemed too complicated, or at the very least a long process.

Guess what? It's not!

I found a simple tutorial on crocheting a rag rug on Vintage Chica a few days ago. There are several tutorials out there (search rag rug on Pinterest, which is how I found the one I liked). I like this one because it's just one stitch (SC, single crochet). You work more intuitively, adding an increase as you round corners, or if you "need to" (if the rug isn't lying flat). I'd rather work it out on my own than try to follow a complicated stitch pattern anyway.

I started this rug yesterday morning while watching the Macy's parade and waiting for my casserole to cook, so you can see it works up really fast.

I started out using leftover strips of "jelly roll" from this tablerunner project, because I love the colors. I have similar cottons in my fabric cabinet too. I tore the jellyroll strips in half lengthwise, making about 1-1/4" strips. I did find that 3/4" strips are alot easier to work with though!

I also found a cool video on youtube HERE, for tying the ends of your strips together. I had been knotting them, but since the jellyroll strips are pretty short I was ending up with a lot of knots on the back. (I actually don't mind them much, but that video has a cool method that leaves barely a bump of a knot).

This project is my "Black Friday Avoidance" strategy. Since it will be a throw rug, on the smallish size, hopefully I'll have it finished and be able to show in the next few days!

Thanksgiving Feast: Peanut Butter Pie

So my brother's girlfriend brought this crack to our Christmas dinner last year:

The expression on my, my sister's, and my mother's faces at the first bite was... priceless (technically thinking of another word, but we're talking about my mother here.)

I knew I could never (never ever ever ever) make this unless it was for a GIANT FAMILY FOOD EXTRAVAGANZA.

WITH WITNESSES.

But, you know, if you don't believe me, the recipe is linked up there below the photo. Which I stole from All Recipes. Then credited. Fair Use, yo!

The recipe doesn't point out that the real killer is adding chopped Reese's cups to the top. That's sort of a must-have.

My problemo right now is... I've been thinking about it since the day after Halloween because PIE DAY is comin! Mmmm....pieeee....

I've been doing "less (i.e. I can't yet do NO) sugar, fewer carbs" for about a month. (Loosely doing the "Belly Fat Cure" plan, although I'm not religious about counting anything. Down 9 lbs!)

I'm pretty sure peanut butter pie is the #1 pie of choice for low-carb recipe modification aficionados. Or maybe #2 behind cheesecake.

Substitutions that won't bring about an OMG!SUGAR! coma, mucho appreciated. We can do this!

Once Upon a Time...

Is anyone watching this one with me? Lu & I are LOVING it. It's our new "must see". In fact, it's on the "I think we need an Amazon Season Pass" list.

If you haven't been watching, in a nutshell...Prince Charming and Snow White send their baby daughter through a "portal" of sorts to another time/place to save her from the evil queen. Meanwhile the evil queen sets a curse upon all of the kingdom that deposits every character into present day Storybrooke, Maine. Only, they have no idea they are fairytale characters. They have no memories of their actual existence...they're just in limbo. Emma, Snow & Charming's baby, is the one who can break the curse. Only, you guessed it, she has no idea who she is either.

It's been a ton of fun so far, and we get excited when a new fairytale persona shows up. This week it's Cinderella. It's smart too...the storyline isn't linear so you have to pay attention. I appreciate smart TV. (I appreciate dumb TV too. heh.)

I also appreciate gratuitously good-looking heroes. Mmmm. Charming...

But what has really captured my fancy (shocking) is Mary Margaret's wardrobe! (MM is really Snow White). Just a few lovelies she has worn in the first 3 episodes...

Anthro dress!

I've been finding myself searching for a knit pattern similar to this top...BWOF? BS? HP? I've seen it somewhere.

Mary Margaret has this sweet, schoolteacher vibe (totally opposite her true characterization of Snow White...show you that another time). I love the cardi's and florals. Especially with the pixie haircut! Too cute.

Fangirly goodness.

Ahem.

The top that inspired this post...allover lace, deep teal cardi. Yum.

Paired with the cutest pants (cords? Can't tell!) and GAH. SHOES. Must have these shoes.

And how about this cute top... in lawn?? I have some lawn stashed. I've got that Simplicity top that is very similar, or the HP Sunshine top. both would need a placket alteration.

Yup, lots of inspiration to be found here, which was sort of unexpected!

My weekend plans consist of finding a birthday gift for my sister... not the easiest task. And, hopefully stitching. I had a cutting-out fiasco last weekend that I don't even want to talk about. It killed my mojo, let's leave it at that. But I think I'm over it and can proceed to the nearest sewing exit...

The Colette Sewing Handbook

GREAT (i.e. filled with stuff for ME) mailbox made a long day end on a high note! Look at what was waiting for me:

I haven't had time to do more than thumb through it excitedly (haha) but here are my first impressions...

The format is different than your normal sewing book in that useful chapters and lessons are sprinkled throughout where it would be natural to run into that particular fit issue or design change. Smart!

(and we know how I love smart!)

Where were we? Oh yea. Here's the thing: I don't really need a "how to" book, and this book is targeted to the "New Seamstress" (says so on the cover). So I wasn't planning on picking this one up. What changed my mind?

The patterns! I had to wait until a preview on Amazon to get clarification, but YES this book has new Colette patterns included! In the FULL size range (33-1/2 to 47-1/2" bust!) My faves are the Meringue Skirt:

Shallow Sunday and the Snake

Sooo I was all mojo'd up because of this, and I went tra-la-la-ing through my fabric boxes (stored behind my sewing cabinet door) looking for the PERFECT wintery fabric and what should fall into my lap but...

A FREAKING SNAKE SKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even me, with my ever present camera, cannot capture this for you on film. I've still got the shakes.

(If I were Oona, I'd have a stash of liquor suitable for curing a snake shake, but since I am not I don't. ALAS.)

You know what soothes my shaken, battered soul? Pinterest.

SPECIFICALLY...yummy eye candy on Pinterest.

If I had to choose just one to deal with THE SNAKE, I'd go with McQueen.

If I had to choose one to MARRY RIGHT FREAKING NOW, it'd be Colin Firth. (But we might have to hire someone to deal with the snake.)

Burda Style 11/11

Maybe it's just the cool date of this issue, but something has finally sparked my sewing urge! There are several things I will trace today and probably a few more that will get flagged with a sticky.

Dress 119: It has a vintage 40s feel in the model photo, so of course I love it. I like the interesting construction lines (although I haven't been a fan of all the "flaps" BS seems to be throwing into random garments. These are less flaps and more...capelet?)

Kimono Jacket #121: I'm sure it's just a big rectangle with a couple of holes for a tie. Smashing though.

Dress #117: "Jessie's Girl" immediately started playing in my head when I saw this dress. I can't explain it. Much like my love for the dress. It's a mystery...

Maxi "granny" Skirt #116: I'm a fan of all things kooky. This is kooky (and not an elastic waist!) If you're into maxi skirts, I think this is a stylish choice.

Little Black Dress #123: Simple and rather perfect.

Dress #107: I really can't control my prairie fashion love. I'll admit it's a problem. Hello my name is Angie and I love the 70s Laura Ingalls look. (Plus) Pants #136: I LOVE these! Woot for cute plus pants!! Especially casual pants...we see them so rarely in BS.

Top #130: Saving my Favorite for last! I LOVE this top. Of course it has ruffles, so that will be off putting to you ruffle haters, but...the lines are SO flattering. I love the sleeve and the seaming and the midriff piece and the peplum. If I still had time to design patterns for myself, I would have designed this. No lie.

Honorable Mention Jacket #132: Another plus design that deserves a mention. I get tired of all the jackets and coats BS puts out, because I don't enjoy making them (totally selfish reason). I also have one tiny closet and nowhere to put winter jackets and coats (so I'm limited as to how many I can store). But this looks like a great basic for shlepping to the grocery store (with those cute pants up there) or walking the trail after school on brisk autumn afternoons. (Assuming I actually walked the trail. Which I might start doing.)

That's it! My picks. I'll be tracing the plus top today and honestly, the Jessie's Girl dress. My warm leggings are cute little boots are calling my name these days and that dress is perfect for that. I might trace the jacket too. I have turquoise stretch velour (don't ask) somewhere... It's prettier than it sounds.

Last night I went to see Footloose with my buddy Anna. This hardcore 80s girl was dubious.

For about 90 seconds.

It was awesome! I love a remake that doesn't think it has to change everything and make it "better".

I'm going to admit it. I've been in denial for a few days about a cancer diagnosis for one of my students at school.

I love her, she's just precious. She's been with me since her freshman year, and is now a senior. I'm heartbroken for her and her family, because it's not going to be an easy fight.

I've been thinking for several days...they must be wrong. I'm going to get an email update any day now, saying Oops! We were wrong, it's just the flu.

That email isn't coming.

I accepted that today, when I stood in the book aisle of the Dollar General, picking out a Lisa Frank coloring book (because who doesn't love coloring Lisa Frank?) and giant box of crayons to stick in her care package. And started to cry.

I cried for the unjustness and the unfairness, and yes, even for selfish reasons too, like that completely helpless feeling. And believe me, there's nothing that brings reality crashing home like crying in the dollar store while picking up grape soda and toilet paper.

She knows I love her. I take comfort in that for now.

I have just 3 words for last nights episode:

Vintage Bathing Suits!

Probably my fave, Laura's eyelet one-piece.

Maggie's suit, although cute, seemed straight out of Fast Times at Ridgemont High to me. (I'm not entirely convinced of the authenticity of the vintage fashions just yet. It's too easy to get vintage-esque these days thanks to the rest of us vintage shoppers and the retailers catering to us. Dear ABC: You're welcome.)

If I wasn't such a sucker for eyelet, Kate's coral striped suit would definitely be my favorite! (Kate wins the episode's Best Hair category too. She's rockin that hair.)

And the one that got away...Colette's brown polkadot suit. How I wish I had gotten a good look at the rest of it! Colette wins for Best Hat.

The series as a whole is a bit slow-moving. If it weren't for the call of the fashions, I might not still be watching. I hope it finds its footing soon!

Anyone else hate the weekly drain of cleaning the house? I sure do. I can never seem to get/stay caught up. I found a great site (through Pinterest of course) that had a free schedule for keeping up with the house in tiny increments throughout the week.

MUCH more doable than me trying to cram everything I miss or didn't get to on my weekends!

I took that advice, tweaked it a bit for MOI (ha), and turned it into a cute sign to hang on the fridge for a reminder. I thought I'd share it here, since it has been working well for me this week. Feel free to download and print it for yourself!

Here's a funny (yet true) quirk of mine: I've never had that dream where I show up somewhere naked or even in my underwear.

Any Fringe fans out there? I'm not gonna lie, I got lost last season and quit watching, but I've recently gotten HOOKED but good once more. As a former X-phile, I am really enjoying this series.

First two episodes this season have been awesome. But I sure miss my Peter. (Any theories as to how he'll return?) Because I miss his face, I bring some Joshua Jackson yummies to tide us all over.

Sometimes Lu & I just play with my vintage jewelry boxes. Sorting, polishing, rearranging. It's quite soothing!

My pearls I keep in old clamshell cases, and all of my vintage earrings and some pins are in these pretty leatherette boxes.

Pretty and vintagey on the outside, but it's the inside that counts...

I haven't found a good storage solution for my collection of stretch bead bracelets yet... Still looking!

Nope. It's at the back of my mind all the time. I have three projects on my sewing table RIGHT NOW that need finishing up (the yellow Violet above, the green check dress from McCalls 6328 below, and the mustard skirt).

And I received my new Colette patterns last week!

I'm especially excited to try the Clover, although pants are usually a disaster for me, and that bow tie top must be muslined. Asap.

Also...I just wanted to say thanks for hanging in there with me during the busy, beginning months of yet another school year. I appreciate you all!

Her retro cuteness is about to go mainstream. I have mixed feelings about this. Zooey has always been sort of an thrifty/vintage fashion trade secret. She is endearing in part because she seems so NORMAL.

I blogged her cotton commercial a year or so ago, and knocked off a skirt from that commercial. This was my fave outfit from that ad campaign though:

EVERYTHING she wore in 500 Days of Summer. Want.

And in her real life, where you assume she doesn't have a stylist (or at least her stylist is as quirky as she is), I love her vintage kitsch.

My Teachery Blog...

Just a quickie post this morning for my teacher friends! I've decided to open a Teachers Pay Teachers store to upload my freebie stuff to, AND to share my classroom/teaching stuff on it's own blog.

A few times the past several weeks I've been dying to post something about teaching or my classroom or to share a free digital item, and I've held back because I know the majority of you aren't teachers and wouldn't be interested. The good news (I think?) is, there are a lot of teachers blogging now! Teacher blogs are EVERYWHERE!

I'm keeping the name I used to use for my class blog...Yo! Ms. Amos! (This is what a student used to say to me, years ago, when he wanted my attention. It was probably annoying but I don't remember it that way now. haha!)

New Colette Patterns!

I don't know how I'm always the last to know, but I seriously think I AM. How did I miss that Colette was releasing 3 new beauties? (Um, maybe because I've been in a beginning-of-school-teacher-induced fog for 4 weeks?)

First, Jasmine, the PERFECT little bow blouse.

Honestly. Could it be more perfect? Those of us with ample chestage who love a bow-tie blouse are celebrating the open neckline! Woohoo!

Then there's the simple and elegant Peony:

Really simple (reminds me a little of the dress in the latest Ottobre Woman, actually) but so pretty. I love all of my vintage-inspired Colette dress patterns, but it's nice that she's made a few lately that don't require upwards of 5 yards of fabric. (Ceylon I'm looking at you.)

And last...Clover. Another one of those "I must have that" vintage style that is so hard to find in actual vintage (that fits a wide variety of sizes). Slim fitting "cigarette" pant:

How adorable was the photo shoot for all of these? Love love.
