Road Less Traveled

I've noticed a trend in blogworld of late. I like to call it the "Look at me Look at me" blog.

Now, blogging in general is a "look at me" kind of activity. But there are blogs out there where the blogger is Queen of the Barn and the sheep flock around her. It doesn't matter what craft, project, or personal crisis Barn Queen blogs about, the sheep can't get enough. Even if its obviously ugly. Or poorly made. Or just boring.

It's like a quasi-high school popularity contest, which, by the way...I thought we all outgrew a couple of decades ago. The more things change the more they stay the same...

And you know what? When I'm directed to those blogs by friends or fellow bloggers, I come away feeling deflated. Because that's not how I blog, or how I write. Or how I AM. And I don't want to change.

I like to think my blog is me. My personality comes through in the way I write, and the things I write about (no matter how off the wall...or cuff...they may be.)

Which IS the point.

So I refuse to apologize, dear lurkers, for being whole-ly un-Queenlike and completely irreverent and often off-topic. I DO eventually get back around to the topic at hand (sewing.)

And, besides, isn't the journey half the fun?

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Good post,I totally agree - i love to be different, I know I am bad at writing but I just post anyway! I am not going to spend hours on it.

  4. I agree. A good blog, to me, needs to offer some personality, some interactivity, occasionally something nice to look at, interesting content, and a sense of passion for the subject matter.

Lately I discovered the genre of fashion blog that is "here's what I wore today, aren't I cute?" and I am totally shaking my head over that concept.

  6. I hear what you are saying! I also notice a lot of similar "copy cat" type of stuff. I don't have the best camera or know how to make my blog fancy. I started comparing myself to these other ladies and my husband recommended I stop blog surfing for awhile. Now that I have my studio in the basement I can't stay out and am staying up later and later each night creating new things. I have a few favorite blog mates and they are folks like you with kind words and nice posts. I feel like my blog is an expression of me...and what means the most to me...my family my friends and sewing! U di have to say that I do want to copy your jeans idea! someday.....luv ya!

  8. Uh oh, now I have to go back and read my blog to make sure I'm not one of the quilty parties, LOL! Actually I've always felt that I shouldn't post about my dogs or my clowning or the Reading Divas book cart drill team when my blog is supposed to be about sewing, but hey, if you can stray off topic on your sewing blog so can I.

  9. I so agree!! It's like highscool all over again! If your not popular then "they" arent going to grace your blog with a visit let alone a comment.

I have visited blogs before and left comments and they never say a word back just like the snobs in highschool!

    I love your blog!

  11. Amen. You're my inspiration- if it weren't for you I wouldn't be blogging at all. Not to mention, I'd probably think I'm the only geek out there. Thanks for keeping it real!
