Vogue 7827

Surprise! Not the project I planned! (when is it ever though??) This is Vogue 7827 out of a poly/rayon (mystery content $1 table) border print. The pattern itself is sadly out of print, and, incidentally, impossible to find an image of on the net. I tried! It's a "butterfly blouse" pattern, and here are the line drawings:
I made View A, because I only had 1.5 yds of this print, and I had actually cut it in half along the fold to make a full, swishy skirt some many moons ago. View A was the only one that would fit on my pieces of cut fabric! (my skirt waistbands became, handily, my waistband.)

This view was supposed to be cut on the bias, so you could easily turn under & topstitch the neckline. I had to cut this border, striped print on the straight grain, so I decided to use a bias tape on the neckline instead.

Of course I didn't have any suitable bias lying around, and no more self-fabric either. So, I used a cotton lace beading instead! I matched the edges and ran a line of straight stitching on the inside edge (on the 5/8 seamline):

The cotton lace has enough "give" to act alot like bias, so it was easy to stitch around the curve. I pressed it flat:

And then cut away the fabric from the seam allowance to about 1/4".

Press the neckline under and topstitch! Pretty inside & out! Bonus: tiny picot edge of the lace just barely peeking out.

The top is basically a giant rectangle, and you end up with these awesome kimono-y sleeves. I really like the waistband that sits right on my hips too. It keeps it from being/feeling too "sloppy".

Oh, and the shoulder seams are only tacked in two places, at the neckline and again about 6-7" away, so you get this peekaboo shoulder effect! Fun!

All in all, a great top, no fit issues (I cut the 16 and added 1" in front for my "fba". That's it.) And it screams SUMMER!! To which, all I can say is....

BRING IT!

  2. That's a very cute, fluttery top. I love that type of sleeve. And I agree about the band on the hip. That pulls the garment in enough so that it doesn't become a muumuu. Very nice.

  11. Cute top! Summer - and the rest of our lives - officially starts a week from Monday here. That's when I will have no more kids in public school. Which means I'm officially O.L.D. But really, Florida summer started about a month ago. LOL!

Pssshhht. My word verification is "salmon". When did we start getting real words? Sheesh. I suppose the next one will be "bagel" or "creamcheese" or "capers".

    Top looks great.
Can I ask a quick technical question...(I ant to try & make a similar top without a pattern)...how does the waistband attach, are the side seams split from the sleeves....would appreciate some guidance if you've time,
    Thanks Kez :)

  21. Kez,

No problem! The side seams are just stitched straight up from the bottom as shown in that top illustration of the pattern. It wouldn't be hard to figure out how far to go if you do the neck tack first. Hem your neckline and then "tack" either side of your neck together (the top of the rectangle). I just did a wide zigzag in place several times. The sleeves were then tacked once more with the wide zigzag about 6-8 inches away from the neckline. No other part of the sleeve is stitched.

Then slip it over your head and figure out how much room your arms need. You could pin the side seams first so you get a feel for it, and to make sure you're leaving enough ease for your middle/waist/tummy.

Once you have the side seams stitched, the waistband is applied "in the round" (stitched in a circle first) to the bottom of your top. It doesn't look like it will work until you stitch the side seams and then it just "does"!

  22. Thanks Angie...just one more quick question - do you cut the side seam from the sleeves or just sew from the bottom up? I really appreciate your help :)
    Kez :)

  23. No cutting, you just sew a line from hem to where you want the "bottom" of your armhole to be. Good luck!
