Kyoto Sew Along, Anyone??

Shannon & I are thinking of having a Hotpatterns Kyoto Skirt Sew-Along!

Now, there's a lot of stuff going on with this skirt! I think both Shannon & I are leaving off the toggles, but I may do a drawstring. I might try the toggles, but I'm not sure I can find any local and I'd rather just use what I have on hand to make this. I might be leaving off the patch pockets, I'm somewhat undecided on that part.

For fabrics, I've been holding onto this pretty, fairly lightweight, pale khaki twill. It's not even "khaki" really, it's even a touch paler than in these photos. It also has a slight "sheen", which I thought eliminated it as a bottoms fabric (my buns don't really need a shiny surface). But what the hey!? I can't find my other khaki twill anyway!

For bias trim fabrics I'm having trouble choosing. The pattern needs to be small enough that bias trim will carry the print consistently along the design lines (curved yoke seam, and I believe the hems are faced with the print too. I may do my drawstrings out of the print if I have enough!)

I have plenty of this aqua/olive/cream print and it IS my favorite color (and looks good next to the twill). The print is rather large and oddly spaced though. I'd have to cut a bias strip to see if I liked it.

A paisley print would be perfect since it is basically small scale, covering a large area. This coral color paisley really pops against the khaki:

I have a bit of this aqua AND coral paisley (who knew? The bounds of my stash truly knows no limits). Which seems like a perfect combination of my favorite parts of the above two fabrics...except I don't think I have enough for bias strips. Grr.

I have more fabrics (ha. Understatement.) that might work, lighting is a bit off in this picture. The cheetah print would be fun (it's not as "yellow" as shown below). The brown with red dot might be interesting too, but I'm not sure what the bias strips would look like.

Since I typically need some sort of motivation to finish projects, we'd love to have some of you Kyoto-owners (or owners to be) join us!! Shannon doesn't typically need motivation. She's better than me with that whole focus thing.

Kyoto Sew Along. Any takers?

  1. I would love to, but I don't have that pattern and not sure I like it that much for me. Now, I think the coral paisley or cheetah is your best bet for consistent bias strip color distribution. My 2 cents worth :)

  2. Shoot! I love them all! You know I'm partial to cheetah/leopard, but the paisley looks darn good, and I love the aqua with the khaki. I'm not much help, am I?

  3. Well... I don't have the Kyoto skirt, but I do have a Hot Patterns shirt I've been meaning to make. Maybe you can include me in the sew along, since it's HP? Maybe???

  4. girl. that skirt has way more than "a lot" going on. Good. Lord.

I like them all, but I think I like the first paisley the best. But then I am a paisley freak and I think paisley looks best with everything. Although I think I would have a hard time cutting it up into strips. That smacks of sacrilege to me.

  5. I don't have this pattern but I have the HP DV Flippy skirt, which also features a fun back skirt panel. I'm looking forward to seeing the Kyoto sew along. Question: where does the bias trim go on this skirt? Is it in a place meant to be seen? I like the coral with the khaki.

  9. I like your first choice for bias trim.

I have had this skirt sitting in my stash for a year now. I just cannot get motivated. It looks like a lot of work!

  10. I'd love to too but I don't have it and I'm still fasting! You could mail me yours and I could trace off my size and mail it back... LOL! Just kiddin'. I love all of your fabric choices (as usual!)

  11. Very interesting skirt. I'm tempted but feeling cautious: it might not be a good style for my shape. I will be watching from the sidelines to see how this pattern sews up for real bodies. BTW: the pale khaki/coral combo is lovely!

  12. I'm back to report you've done it again: I've bought ANOTHER pattern you've blogged about (please stop, or at least take a break, my sewing budget is not in good shape this month!) Clicked off-line to get some work done, but this skirt stuck in my mind, so I poked around and found the YouTube videos, which sold me on it. I even have some lightweight chino about the same color as yours I might use, although it could take me all summer to settle on contrast trim options.
